If you work with glass, then you need safety glasses that are suitable for glass blowing.  We are now able to provide both prescription and non-prescription safety glasses for glass blowing.

Schott Glass Technologies has developed a new glass lens for both filtering sodium flare and contrast enhancement.  ACE, short for “Amethyst Contrast Enhancer” glass is very efficient in filtering sodium flare in addition to providing ultraviolet protection to 390 mm.

The ACE (Amethyst Contrast Enhancement) glass lens is becoming a preferable choice of hot glass workers, both commercial and artistic, where the filtering yellow light (sodium flare) is desirable as it filters the sodium flare at 589 nm.

The ACE glass lens, replaces the Didymium lenses previously used.  ACE, is short for “Amethyst Contrast Enhancer Glass, utilizes rare earth oxides in its composition to provide the unique colour enhancing effect and was originally developed to improve discrimination between different coloured objects on flight instrument panels, this unique lens also offers excellent filtering at the sodium line (589nm) as well as moderate UV protection. Being dichroic, under fluorescent lighting, this lens will have a blue appearance.

This glass is very efficient in filtering sodium flare in addition to providing ultraviolet protection to 390 mm. The ACE glass is becoming a preferable choice of hot glass workers both commercial and artistic where the filtering yellow light (sodium flare) is desirable as it filters the sodium flare at 589 nm. It is very comfortable for viewing under high ambient light conditions such as when working with glowing heat sources for a duration of time. Also, although it has a relatively low luminous transmission of 38%, it is not recommended for sun protection use unless UV filtering coatings are applied as it has a UVA absorption of 85% and UVB of 100% absorbing 89% of the total UV spectra.

Basically, the colour enhancement concept works by selectively positioning transmission in the blue, green, and red spectral regions whereby one can improve the colour discrimination between different colour objects. These are the same colours used to produce a colour television picture. They optimize the readability of such displays under high ambient light conditions.

ACE (Amethyst Contrast Enhancement) glass lenses have an Abbe value of 49.2. Rx Glass offers single vision prescription lenses and plano lenses.

ACE (Amethyst Contrast Enhancing) glass must be at least 3.0 mm thick for effective filtration because at 3.0mm thick it filters out the sodium flare at 589nm. ACE glass can be chemically hardened which is advisable at an extra charge.

There are only a limited number of these lenses in plano - which is no prescription in a wrap around frame for $260.  The wrap around frame recommended is the OG 210.
